She is a Professor of Law at the University of Oslo, Norway. She comes from Latvia where she took a law degree at the University of Latvia (1994-1999) and an LLM in European and International Law at the Riga Graduate School of Law (1999-2001). She is a member of the multi-disciplinary Northern Areas Committee at the University of Oslo which works with dissemination and facilitation of research and teaching about the Arctic. Her main fields of research are international law, law of the sea, European law, environmental law and, more recently, space law.
