Bhaven N. Sampat is an Associate Professor in the Department of Health Policy and Management at Columbia University, an affiliated faculty member at Columbia Law School, and a Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research. He received his B.A., M.A., M.Phil. and Ph.D. (all in economics) from Columbia. Most of his research focuses on issues at the intersection of health policy and innovation policy. For example, he is currently examining the implementation of pharmaceutical patent laws in developing countries, the effects of upstream patents on downstream innovation and commercialization, the roles of the public and private sectors in drug development, and the returns to different types of medical research. His previous work includes research on U.S. drug patent policy, the political economy of the the NIH, patent examination and patent quality, measuring innovation, and the role of patents in university-industry technology transfer. During the 2015-16 academic year he was on sabbatical leave as a Visiting Professor at the Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service at NYU, and as a Distinguished Scholar in Residence at the Engelberg Center on Innovation Law and Policy at the NYU School of Law.
