Stefaan Raes has been the president of the Competition Council of Belgium from October 2004 to August 2013. He works now as a partner at Liedekerke Wolters Waelbroeck Kirkpatrick, in Belgium. He has a law degree of the University of Leuven (Belgium) (1980) and a Master of Law degree of the University of Chicago Law School (USA) (1981). He has been an attorney at the Brussels bar before being elevated to the bench of the Belgian judiciary in 1994. First he was a judge in the Court of first instance in Brussels, and later, as of 1998, an appellate judge in the Court of appeal in Brussels. Until his appointment at the helm of the Competition Council, he heard appeals against decisions of the Council. Throughout his career, he has shown a particular interest in issues of procedural law, which has resulted in a wide variety of publications. From 1986 until 1994 he has been active in this field at the Law Faculty of the University of Leuven.
