Head of Unit of the European Competition Network

Sofia Alves is Head of Unit at the European Commission, DG Competition, responsible for coordination of the European Competition Network (ECN) since 2013. She has an extensive background in law, holding a degree from Faculdade de Direito de Lisboa, in Lisbon, Portugal and a Master’s degree in European Law from the College of Europe in Bruges, Belgium. Before joining the European Commission DG Competition – as an administrator, in March 2003, Ms. Alves spent five years with the General Court in Luxembourg as Référendaire in the chambers of the Portuguese judge, Rui Moura Ramos. While working at the European Commission, Ms. Alves worked in the Transport Anti-Trust Unit, and the Mergers Policy and Case Scrutiny Unit. In March 2008, she was named Deputy Head of Unit in Mergers, Unit E4 – Basic Industries, Manufactured Goods and Agriculture, and supervised a great number of DG COMP merger investigations in these sectors.
