Santiago Martínez Lage is Managing Partner of MARTÍNEZ LAGE, ALLENDESALAZAR & BROKELMANN, a Spanish firm which has been the leading specialist in European Union and Competition Law since its foundation in 1985. He has appeared before the Spanish authorities, the European Commission and the Spanish and EU courts in many high-profile cases. As a member of the Carrera Diplomática (‘Spanish diplomatic service’) from 1972 to 1983, currently on extended leave of absence, he was Head of the Legal Service of the Secretary of State for Relations with the European Community (1980-83). He is an arbitrator in the Corte Española de Arbitraje (“Spanish Court of Arbitration”), the Corte de Arbitraje de Madrid (“Court of Arbitration of Madrid”) and the Corte Civil y Mercantil de Arbitraje CIMA (“Civil and Commercial Court of Arbitration”). Martínez Lage has acted as an arbitrator in major national and international disputes. He was the Founder and Editor for more than 28 years of the Gaceta Jurídica de la Unión Europea y de la Competencia (‘EU and Competition Law Gazette’). He has delivered a large number of courses, classes and conferences on European Union Law and Competition Law at various universities, including the Complutense University and the University Carlos III in Madrid, and the New York School of Law. Martínez Lage is also the author of numerous publications on Community and Competition Law and Co-Director of the Fundación Rafael del Pino seminar on Competition Law and Economics. Professional directories refer to him as “the founder of modern competition law in Spain” (Chambers, 2014). This latter publication elevates Martínez Lage to the position of Senior Statesman, the only one in his field in Spain. In 2013 he was honored with the Aptissimi Award by ESADE Alumni for his professional career.
