Dr. Rob van der Noll is Senior Economist at Chief Economist team of the Dutch Competition Authority. He previously was at SEO and worked at CPB Netherlands Bureau for Economic Policy Analysis, ABN AMRO Bank and at RBB Economics. Rob worked extensively on competition cases (including the Telefoongids-Gouden Gids directories merger, approved by the NMa, and the Campina-Friesland Foods dairy merger, approved by the European Commission). Rob has also been assisting private parties with confidential reports. He was awarded the PhD at Erasmus University Rotterdam / Tinbergen Institute in 2006. His PhD in industrial organization dealt with information problems in insurance markets, online retailing, and the competition for attention. Rob spent a semester as visiting PhD-student at Nuffield College, Oxford University. Rob’s track record covers analytical economic skills, hands-on business experience and quantitative analysis, delivering economic insights to private and public sector clients. The themes Rob has worked on include incentives in social insurance schemes, measurement of market risk, vertical restraints, the economics of interconnection in telecommunication markets, indicators of competition law infringements and the assessment of economic evidence by the courts. Rob applies the toolkit of micro-economics to study how markets work. Recent research themes at SEO Economic Research are the regulation of network industries, the economics of digitization and copyright, the deterrence effect of the cartel prohibition and an international comparison of abuse of dominance. He also has experience in econometrics and quantifying hypothetical scenarios, applicable to (prospective) merger assessments and (retrospective) cartel assessments. In the majority of projects, Rob acted as project manager.
