Katja Viertiö joined the Commission in 1994. She first worked in the industrial policy department of the Directorate-General ("DG") for Industry and then in the Commission’s external relations services where she was mainly dealing with Poland’s accession to the EU. From 1999 to 2000 she worked in the Cabinet of Mr Liikanen, Commissioner for Enterprise and the Information Society. In 2000 she moved to the Information Society DG where she spent four years working on the liberalisation of the EU telecommunications market. She then joined the Competition DG in 2004 and first worked as a case handler in the area of electronic communications (antitrust and ex ante regulation) and from 2008, in the policy and case scrutiny unit. In the latter, her main tasks have included the preparation of the December 2008 Guidance on the Commission’s enforcement priorities in applying Article 82 to abusive exclusionary conduct by dominant undertakings and the 2010 "verticals package" consisting in a revised Block Exemption Regulation and Guidelines on vertical restraints. She is currently working for DG Justice as Deputy Head of Unit in the field of Consumer strategy, Representation and International relations.
