Joachim Bornkamm

Joachim Bornkamm is a judge at the Bundesgerichtshof, the Federal Supreme Court of Germany at Karlsruhe. He is a German national, born in 1948, who received his law education at the Universities of Freiburg, Munich, Lausanne (Switzerland) and Oxford (Trinity College, Dipl. in Law), taking law degrees in 1973 and 1976 and the Dr. iur. in 1979 (»Free Press and Fair Trial in English, American and German Law«, Nomos 1980) from the University of Freiburg. After stages as a magistrate and as a judge at the Amtsgericht (Magistrate’s Court) and Land¬gericht (Regional Court) at Freiburg he worked in the Copyright Department of the Ministry of Justice in Bonn from 1981 to 1983 and was an assistant to the Federal Supreme Court from 1985 to 1988. He was appointed to the Court of Appeal at Karlsruhe in 1989 (Division for Intellectual Property, Law of Unfair Competition and Cartels). In 1996 he was appointed Federal Judge and member of the Bundesgerichts¬hof (Federal Supreme Court) where, again, he deals with Intellectual Property and Competition cases. Since November 2006 he is the Presiding Judge of the First Civil Chamber (Intellectual Property, Unfair Competition), but remains a member of the Chamber dealing with Competition cases. Dr. Bornkamm has been teaching Intellectual Property and Competition law at University for a number of years. Since March 2000 he holds an Honorary Professorship at the University of Freiburg. He published a large number of articles on Intellectual Property and on Competition Law. He is co-author of Langen/Bunte, Kommentar zum deutschen und europäischen Kartellrecht (Commentary on German and European Cartel Law, 10th ed. 2006), of Hefermehl/Köh¬ler/ Bornkamm, Wettbewerbsrecht (Law of Unfair Competition, 25th ed. 2007) and of Ahrens, Der Wettbewerbsprozess (Litigation in Competition Cases, 5th ed. 2005).
