Dirk Schroeder is a partner based in the Cologne office. Mr. Schroeder’s practice focuses on EU and competition law including EU and German merger control, cartels, monopolies and state aid. He represents clients before the European Commission, the German Federal Cartel Office, the European Courts and German courts. He has extensive experience in the postal, telecommunications, media, chemical, oil, energy and healthcare industries. He is widely published, a co-editor of the journal Wirtschaft und Wettbewerb and the Frankfurter Kommentar zum Kartellrecht and is a professor at the University of Cologne. He is distinguished as a leading Competition and Antitrust lawyer by Chambers Global. Mr. Schroeder is representing AXA, Dow Chemical and other companies in cartel cases. He represented BC Partners in several merger control cases in the broadband cable industry. He conducted the appeal proceedings for Axel Springer against the prohibition of the merger with ProSiebenSat.1, which were twice before the Federal Court of Justice. Mr. Schroeder represents 25 European postal operators with respect to the REIMS terminal dues agreements, which received two formal exemptions from the European Commission. Mr. Schroeder represented the European Commission before the European Courts in the cartonboard cases. Mr. Schroeder received a doctorate in law (Dr. iur.) from the University of Cologne in 1983. He studied at Ecole Nationale d’Administration, Paris, from 1981 to 1982. Mr. Schroeder passed the second state examination at the State of North Rhine-Westphalia in 1981 and the first state examination in Cologne in 1977. Mr. Schroeder is a member of the Bar in Cologne. He is a member of the board of the German competition law association (Studienvereinigung Kartellrecht) and a member of the professional rules committee of the German Lawyers’ Association (Deutscher AnwaltVerein). His native language is German, and he is fluent in English and French.
