Dr. Dimitrios-Panagiotis Tzakas is attorney-at-law at the Supreme Court and Associate of the Hellenic Institute of International and Foreign Law. Dimitris studied law at the University of Athens (LL.B.) and the University of Hamburg (LL.M.). His Ph.D. Thesis (University of Hamburg – awarded with summa cum laude) deals with the jurisdictional and conflict-of-laws aspects of civil liability in cases of antitrust law violations (Die Haftung für Kartellrechtsverstöße im internationalen Rechtsverkehr, C.H. Beck/Nomos Verlagsgesellschaft 2011). From 2009 till 2010, Dr. Tzakas was Research Fellow at the Chair for European Law of the Université Catholique de Louvain. Since 2011, he is an assistant in the Department of Commercial Law at the University of Athens. He has been awarded scholarships by the University of Hamburg, the German Academic Exchange Service (Deutscher Akademischer Austausch Dienst e.V. – DAAD) and the legacy “Maria Stai”. Dimitris specializes in Finance and Competition Law and has published articles in several international journals (e.g. Common Market Law Review, Legal Issues of Economic Integration, GmbH-Rundschau, Recht der Internationalen Wirtschaft, Wirtschaft und Wettbewerb, Zeitschrift für Europäisches Privatrecht) relating to Competition, Banking, Capital Markets, Company and Insolvency Law. He has also served as member of the legislative committee for the transposition of the EU Directive 2013/36/EU on access to the activity of credit institutions and the prudential supervision of credit institutions and investment firms (CRD IV) into the Greek legal order, and as member of the Working Party on Civil Law Matters (General Questions) in the course of the Hellenic Presidency of the Council of the EU. Furthermore, he regularly takes part in the Round Table “Security Rights over Real Property” of the Association of German Pfandbrief Banks (Verband deutscher Pfandbriefbanken – VdP) as expert on Greek law.
