Bernd Langeheine is a senior consultant based in the Brussels and Cologne offices of Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton LLP. Mr Langeheine’s practice focuses on EU antitrust law. Prior to joining the firm, Mr. Langeheine was Deputy Director-General for Mergers of the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Competition (DG COMP) until 2014, where he oversaw the European Commission’s enforcement of the EU Merger Regulation during Commissioner Joaquín Almunia’s tenure as Competition Commissioner. Before his appointment at DG COMP, Mr. Langeheine served as Director for Telecommunications Policy at the European Commission’s Information Society and Media Directorate-General between 2002 and 2011. From 1999 to 2002, he headed the General Policy unit at DG Com. In the 1990s, he was a member of the EC’s Legal Service before being appointed to head the Trade Section in the Washington Delegation of the European Commission. Between 1987 and 1990, Mr Langeheine also worked as law clerk (référendaire) at the European Court of Justice, and from 1983 to 1987, he worked in the Trade Policy Division of the European Commission’s External Relations DG, dealing with anti-dumping/subsidies issues. Mr Langeheine has spoken widely on a broad array of European competition law issues and, from 1981 to 1983, he was a lecturer in law at the University of Exeter. Mr. Langeheine spent the academic year 1993/94 as an EU Fellow at the Business School of the University of Washington in Seattle. He studied law and political science at the Universities of Hamburg and Berlin and holds a Ph. D. in law. His native language is German, he is fluent in English and French.
