Abel Mateus

With a PhD in Economics from the University of Pennsylvania, Abel Mateus is Executive Director of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. Before that, he was a member of the Board of Directors and Executive Director of Banco de Portugal, as well as a member of the Monetary Commission and the Economic Policy Committee of the European Commission. He was a senior economist at the World Bank, where he worked with several countries in North Africa and Latin America. As a director of Banco de Portugal, he was for six years responsible for monetary policy in Portugal and for Portuguese accession to the single currency. In his academic career, he is one of the co-founders of NOVA – School of Business and Economics, where he also taught. He has also lectured at the Catholic University of Portugal, the University of Maryland, the University of New York and University College London. He is the author of a dozen books and 150 articles.
